An-Nahar Research and Documentation Center was founded in 1967 and soon became one of the most dynamic centers of the Middle East. Developing in line with the users’ requirements, it is more than a simple archive meant for the use of the newspaper’s staff only. Having met the challenge of the electronic revolution, the Center has grown over the years into a meeting point of those interested in Arab and Middle Eastern affairs. It is consulted daily by a large spectrum of visitors ranging from university students to decision-makers in every field.
Achievements and Activities
In line with recent technical achievements in terms of electronic documentation, An-Nahar Research Center has created a new program, ANAIS, devised for both intranet and internet.
ANAIS provides an easy and rapid access to “An-Nahar” index as well as the Press – Clipping and Photos sections.
1. The Internet Option
The database of the “An-Nahar newspaper” is available online from 1988 to 2005. Researchers from any part of the world may now consult An-Nahar over 18 years and retrieve any of its texts or pages for the said period.
The search is done by keywords between 1988 and 1994, while the years 1995 and on are based on a full-text search.
2. The Intranet Option
Access to our database is within the reach of all the staff of a university or any other establishment, through a corporate Intranet system centralized in a SQL server application. Research becomes more flexible and the research screen is more simplified.

3. Indexed “An-Nahar” daily from 1988 to 2005
It is the best research tool, with a unique process of consultation as far as accuracy and research flexibility are concerned.

4. The “Archive” formula
It includes the entire collection of the daily “An-Nahar” since it was first published on 4 August 1933 until the current year. In this formula the newspapers are digitized in Tiff format and the search is by date within each CD-ROM.

5. The Press-Clipping Section
The Center offers a comprehensive coverage of the Middle Eastern and international press – more than 4000 files covering 100 subjects based on 50 daily sources in Arabic, English and French.
The information is classified according to:
Personalities, covering the most important Lebanese, Arab and International figures, and Subjects pertaining to the Arab political, economic, social and cultural fields.
6. The Photo Section
This section is a gold mine for those interested in every aspect of Lebanese and Arabic events. It includes more than 3 million photographs, a great number of which are rare, historical ones dating back to the 1930’s. In 1992, the photo section proceeded to transfer photos from their original paper format into an electronic one; and currently photos are indexed, scanned, and stored on CD Rom.
Files on specific subjects can be devised upon request.
This section is equally active in the book editing sector where a great number of photos are chosen for their rarity, their role as a real memory of Arab events, and sometimes to illustrate certain texts as witnesses to the authenticity of their contents.
7. “An-Nahar” and “Supplements” on Microfilm
From 1933 to 1997, “An-Nahar” daily is available on 35mm microfilms and can be consulted in our Center or acquired at the price of USD 400 per year for the daily and USD 150 per year for each supplement.
8. The Gebran Tueni Memorial Library
Founded equally in 1967 it includes 15000 books and 4000 pamphlets in Arabic, English, and French, all classified on the shelves according to Dewey decimal classification system. They constitute an unrivalled source of information on the Arab World.

تأسس مركز النهار للأبحاث والتوثيق عام 1967 وسرعان ما أصبح واحداً من أكثر المراكز دينامية في الشرق الأوسط. وقد تطوّر، تبعاً لحاجات الذين يستخدمونه، بحيث بات أكثر من مجرد أرشيف للعاملين في الجريدة وحدهم. ويستقبل المركز يومياً مجموعة كبيرة من الزوار، من طلاب الجامعات إلى صانعي القرار في كل مجال إجتماعي، ثقافي، سياسي أو إقتصادي. وإضافة إلى دوره كبنك للمعرفة، يحظى المركز بالإنتماء إلى " النهار"، الصحيفة اليومية الأولى في لبنان والأكثر صدقية وثقة في العالم العربي.
إنجازات ونشاطات
في إطار مواكبته الثورة المعلوماتية، أعدّ مركز النهار للأبحاث والتوثيق برنامجاً جديداً للتوثيق الإلكتروني (ANAIS ) يعمل، وفق أحدث تكنولوجيا المعلومات، ضمن بيئتي : "الإنترنت " و"الإنترانت"، ويتيح إستخدام قاعدة بيانات كشاف " النهار" والقصاصات الصحافية والصور بطريقة سهلة وسريعة.
1. خدمة الإنترنت
وضع مركز النهار للأبحاث والتوثيق قاعدة بيانات كشّاف النهار من عام 1988 إلى عام 2005 على الأنترنت، وبات في متناول الباحثين أينما كانوا، تصفّح 18 عاماً من ذاكرة "النهار" وإسترجاع أي نص أو أي صفحة، استناداً إلى نظام البحث بالنص (FULL TEXT SEARCH ) بدءا من العام 1995 وحتى الآن، ونظام البحث بالكلمات المفاتيح للسنة 1994 وما قبلها.
2. خدمة الإنترانت
يمكن تشغيل قاعدة بيانات كشّاف " النهار" ونسخة الأرشيف الإلكتروني، وفق بيئة الإنترانت لمن يرغب من المؤسسات. مما يوسع دائرة المستخدمين (users ) ويجعل عملية إسترجاع المعلومات أكثر مرونة وغاية في السهولة.

3. كشّاف النهار
إنه قاعدة معلومات إلكترونية تتيح إسترجاع نصوص الجريدة أو صفحاتها، بطريقة فورية. وهو متوافر منذ العام 1988 حتى الآن.
ويعمل بنظام ويندوز العربي.
الثمن: 800 دولار أميركي للسنة الواحدة.

4. الأرشيف الإلكتروني
يتضمّن مجموعة جريدة " النهار" كاملة منذ صدور عددها الأول في 4 آب 1933 حتى اليوم. هذه النسخة من الأرشيف الإلكتروني محفّظة على أقراص مدمجة في صيغة (Tiff ) وتعمل وفق نظام " ويندوز". وهي مزوّدة برنامج بحث يتيح إسترجاع صفحات الجريدة بحسب التاريخ.
الثمن: من عام 1933 إلى عام 1975 : 200 دولار أميركي للسنة الواحدة.
من عام 1976 إلى عام 2004 : 100 دولار أميركي للسنة الواحدة .

5. قسم القصاصات الصحافية
يوفّر المركز تغطية واسعة للأحداث الشرق الأوسطية والعالمية. وهو يملك 4000 ملف تشمل 100 موضوع مستقاة من 50 مصدراً صحافياً بالعربية والإنكليزية والفرنسية. والمعلومات منسّقة في هذا القسم بحسب الشخصيات والموضوعات.
كذلك يمكن تحضير ملفات خاصة بحسب الطلب.
6. قسم الصور
يعتبر أرشيف الصور منجماً ذهبياً للباحثين المهتمين باحداث لبنانية وعربية ودولية، ويضم قرابة ثلاثة ملايين صورة، بعضها نادر وتاريخي ويعود إلى فترة الثلاثينات من القرن العشرين.
وقام المركز بتحويل ملفات الصور الورقية إلى قاعدة بيانات إلكترونية باتت تختزن نحو 500 ألف صورة رقمية.
كما يقدّم المركز خدمة خاصة ويقوم بنسخ (scanning ) صور مختلفة وتخزينها على أقراص مدمجة، لمن يرغب من المؤسسات والأفراد.
وأيضاً يزوّد المركز العديد من الكتب بعضاً من الصور التي تنعش الذاكرة وتشهد على صدقية النص.
7. "النهار" على الميكروفيلم
" النهار " اليومية وملاحقها الأسبوعية متوافرة من عام 1933 إلى عام 1997 على أفلام 35 ملم، يمكن الإطلاع عليها في المركز كما يمكن شراؤها بسعر 400 دولار أميركي للسنة الواحدة للجريدة اليومية، و 100 دولار أميركي سنوياً لكل ملحق.
8. مكتبة جبران تويني التذكارية
تأسست عام 1967 وتضم نحو 15 ألف كتاب ومجلد، اضافة الى 4000 منشورة ومطبوعة بالعربية والأنكليزية والفرنسية، منسقة بحسب نظام ديوي العشري. وتعتبر مجموعات المكتبة مصدراً لا مثيل له للمعلومات عن العالم العربي. كذلك تضم المكتبة مراجع مهمة وموسوعات، منفصلة ومجلدة، إضافة إلى أطلس وخرائط.
و المكتبة مفتوحة أمام جمهور الباحثين.
